Should I get Facebook?

Looking for any advice on whether or not I should get Facebook? I had set up an account a year and a half ago during the first week my school was on there and then spent 8 hours that first day making my profile, looking up friends (both new and old), and looking up random people from my school. It was then that I realized how much time I wasted and how addictive it was so I closed my account that same day. All of my friends are on it and are telling me to get it since many of them are either graduating from college this year or go to schools in other states and say it helps to keep in touch. I've been preaching against it and resisting the urge to join, but reconsidering now. Let me know what you think.

Thanks...

Scott

It is indeed VERY addictive. I have spent many hours on it. BUT, that being said, I also find it to be a really great way to keep in touch with my friends from other schools! Plus, after you've looked at everything, you can leave it alone for several weeks, just checking it when someone leaves a comment on your wall or sends you a message.
Reply:My daughter is part of it and it does help her keep in touch with her friends who have went to other colleges. It is also how her boyfriend broke up with her. He had the nerve to first post that he had a weird relationship with her--then he changed it to say he was single.
Reply:I have Facebook, and it is a great way to keep up with friends. In fact, I would say it is one of the best ways to reconnect with old friends because the forum is fairly closed - ie, you have to have a valid .edu address and people must be recognized by you in order to view your personal information. However, it can be addictive; I have friends who spend hours a day on Facebook. I think it is like any other website or game; it can be a great tool so long as you practice restraint and use it in moderation. That being said, happy facebooking!
Reply:I love Facebook. It's addictive at first but then you get over it. You just have to learn to control yourself. Go ahead. The pros outweigh the cons by a mile.
Reply:It's addictive for about the first few weeks. After you've had it for a while you tend to completely ignore it. I used to be addicted to facebook and now I don't even think of "Facebook People" as real human beings anymore.

That being said, yes, it is good for keeping in touch with people. My advice to you is if that you're worried about wasting valuable academic time (like I am right now) wait until the current semester ends (if it hasn't already for you) and then re-open your account.
Reply:heyblue, not anymore with the edu address since there is now facebook for high school(is anybody as mad as I am about this). Anyway, scott, you got good advices, but still want to offer my two cents.

Yes Facebook is addictive, but curb the amt of time you spend on it. Not only is it a great way to keep up with friends,it's also good for keeping up with teachers. I had an english teacher who sent the class updates and posted homework links on there.

Finally if you're the type(like me) that hates calling people, it's a great way to talk to people without hearing their voices and wasting minutes.

Happy Facebooking.
Reply:Just look ahead and see if you'd be willing to email your entire class your new email address each and every time. Having a profile (either facebook or myspace) is like having your own private website you can update with stuff about you. including email addresses.
