My son is going off to college this fall and I would like to stay in contact with him. Would facebook work?

I use skype to keep in touch with a friend in Europe and could use it with him. But today's generation is very techno savy and I want to keep up with some of it even if I will be very behind the times.

My son is going off to college this fall and I would like to stay in contact with him. Would facebook work?
I'm a college sophomore and honestly, I much prefer a phone call or email from my mom. It's much more personal. Getting a facebook would be fine as long as it doesn't turn into a way of "monitoring" your son.
Reply:Thank you for each input - it really helps to hear from a diverse group of men and women. Thank you Report It

Reply:try MySpace.com it is so easy to contact friends and share pics, and it's fast too, you will be able to message just like you are chatting back and forth when you are online.
Reply:Facebook is good, Skype is nice for cheap VOIP phonecalls.

If its just you and him, then stick to emails, but everyone is using facebook, and it is nice, plus you could keep in touch with your friends too and he could keep in touch with his friends.
Reply:its the best way to keep in touch myspace is more dangerous
Reply:Yes, Facebook would be good. However, addiction to these Web 2.0 sites is high. Use with caution.
Reply:yes facebook or myspace work great all you have to do is send him a message it works like email
Reply:Facebook would be a great way to keep in touch. I know sometimes I want to check in with how someone is doing, but don't quite have enough "material" to strike up a conversation, so you can just visit their profile, see their latest activity, look at their new pictures, etc, etc. You can send little reminders to each other vias "pokes," or wall posts. Just make sure it doesn't turn into a "I'm your mom and I'm tracking everything you do on facebook" kind of thing and it'll work great! You never know until you try, so I recommend signing up and taking facebook for a spin to check it out. It's not like it costs anything!

Definitely don't forget the power of a phone call every now and then though, there really is no comparison.
Reply:What is wrong with a phone?
Reply:Facebook is nice. It has a lot of features, and the people who run it are truly concerned about user-privacy. Moreso than other similar services. With a Facebook account you can both write journals and upload photos to an archive. As well as email.
Reply:if you decide to communicate with facebook, you have to create you own account first... if you have time for it. why not just stick to emails and phone calls... its more personal...
