Is it true that some companies may access Facebook profiles of uni students to select potential employees?

I heard that some companies may browse through Facebook profiles of university/college students and select potential employees for graduate opportunities/internships.

I know that often companies Will look up potential employees' facebook/myspace/etc. I don't think the recruit that way, but they look up applicants.
Reply:There are a lot of companies out there, I'm sure you can find a company that does about anything.

However, much more often now a days company's are looking at myspace pages and facebook pages before taking on new hires.

Best plan is not to put anything on there you wouldn't want strangers to know about you.
Reply:Absolutely....

I know that it's easy for people to be "researched" on facebook, and i believe that schools have some admistrator access to thier students facebook accounts. Also, unless you have it set so that just your friends can see you, anyone can search your name.

Also, be careful about WHO's on your friend list. If the chain goes like this you--%26gt; friend of employer--%26gt; employer, they can follow that chain with a few clicks...

ANYTHING on the internet can be used against you. I've even seen a few cases where the people were turned down a job because they had a "risque" myspace page. The funny thing was, it wasn't the person who set it up. It was someone who didn't like them, and basically planted a bad myspace page to give them a bad reputation.

I personally think it's wrong to judge people by what's on a highly hackable site such as Myspace. You have no proof that things being said on thier profile are things writen by them, as the case above demonstrates.
