Do colleges really check MySpace and Facebook profiles for admissions?

I heard this rumor that colleges are starting to check the MySpace and Facebook profiles or blogs of students that are applying to them. Is this true? I can't imagine they actually take the time to look through everyone's profile, but I'm kind of worried. I have things that I *cough* wouldn't really want them to see on my blog, but it's how I stay connected with my friends so I don't want to stop blogging. I guess I could set it to private, but I want people to be able to read it! Just... not college admissions people.

Help! Should I really be worried or am I just paranoid?

Do colleges really check MySpace and Facebook profiles for admissions?
The answer is yes...Though as others have said I doubt it is something they check on 100% of those applying for their school.

If your application had a place for your to put in your email address....they may very well check it. A simple search with your email address can turn up a lot of things.

As others have said, when you put things on the Internet you are basically putting it out in public. As there really isn't anything that is private on the Internet. So be careful what you put there. It may not hit you this time, but it will when you go looking for a job or later if your job has a security clearance...
Reply:YES !!

So do companies. It has just become part of the deal.

If you dont want it there for the world to see..you best keep it off the net.
Reply:it's generally more of a grad school thing, not undergrad, but ya never know, it could happen.
Reply:In some cases yes. I am an RA at the University of Arkansas and I know for a fact that my facebook was checked before I was hired. Some colleges have people randomly checking facebooks/myspaces; but for checking every single one, I doubt it. Just don't put pictures or things on there you wouldn't want the whole world to see...wait, facebook/myspace already does that...just be careful.
Reply:No
Reply:I'm sure they don't check it for EVERYONE, but it is entirely possible, and I think it's plausible, that some colleges check out some of their applicants. And there's no way to know whether you will be checked out or not, so you have to be careful.

When I was applying for jobs at big law firms last fall, one of my interviewers had Googled me, and printed out pages (!) to discuss with me during the interview.
